Despite that, there are plenty of legislators who ran on the Contract With America in 1994—that’s 12 years ago!—who are running for reëlection this year, thus exceeding their election pledge to stop at twelve years. Hayworth, AZ-08
John Hostettler, IN-09
Walter Jones, NC-03
Sue Kelly, NY-19
Ray LaHood, IL-18
Tom Latham, IA-04
Steven LaTourette, OH-14
Sue Myrick, NC-09
Robert Ney, OH-18
Charlie Norwood, GA-09
George Radanovich, CA-19
John Shadegg, AZ-03
Mac Thornberry, TX-13
Todd Tiahrt, KS-04
Dave Weldon, FL-15
Jerry Weller, IL-11
Ed Whitfield, KY-01
Roger Wicker, MS-01

Here are the senators elected that year who made the same pledge:

Mike DeWine, OH
Jon Kyl, AZ
Rick Santorum, PA
Olympia Snowe, ME
Craig Thomas, WY

All of these Republican Contract With America candidates are seeking reëlection! Simply by running to serve in excess of twelve years, the above hypocrites are breaking their promise and living that lie, whether they win or lose.

Riddle: How do you get two sets of tires home on one motorcycle? Answer: Like this…As I mentioned, I’ve got a track day on Monday. I *knew* there was a little bit of something stuck in the tread of my rear tire…visions of me sitting at the track in the pits with a flat rear tire, like a sad wall flower at the Senior prom, while all the other kids have fun danced through my head. So, off to the shop this afternoon to get new tires fit. I guess when I sell the bike, the new owner will get *two* sets of tires. The ones on it were fine! The little metal thingy is still embedded in there, but it doesn’t go all the way through. Lucky them. Red looked at me strangely as I pulled into our back door, and hopefully asked Are those Ebay gold?. Sadly, no, honey, they went right into the MAN CAVE with all the rest of my squirreled away treasures. At the shop, the mechanic chewed my ear off for an hour about his experiences of being a long haul trucker in the US for 3.5 years. [He's actually a Kiwi, aka New Zealander to the lay person] He and his girlfriend [they say partner here, as commonlaw marriages and unmarried couples are *very* common] now live a few feet away from the Vic market. He walks to work in 5 minutes. How cool would *that* be?!?Anyway, that’s what I want to talk about; the adventurous Aussie spirit. The first time I had this happen, was when I was off on another motorcycle related errand. The guy at this shop proceeded to tell me over the course of an hour (I was there buying a bag I think, took about 5 minutes) about his adventures in the US. Apparently, he and a friend had called around looking for some Honda parts, and had gotten in touch with a Honda dealership in Texas. Well, it turned out that it was about the biggest Honda dealership in the galaxy. It was called something like, Big Bobs Hondas” or some such thing. Well, they rang up from Melbourne and calmly asked to talk to “Big Bob”. His secretary goes and gets him and puts him on the phone. Long story short, Bob is a millionaire, invites the boys over to the US, and offers to pick them up in LA in his private jet. Motorcycle shop guy decided not to do this, as they really wanted to go to Sturgis in the Dakotas. So thats what they did. The flew to LA, bought a couple of old beater bikes, and rode them around the US for a couple of months on their way to Sturgis. Once they got there, they were looking for a place to stay, and were in a restaurant talking about it. A guy overhears them, and invites them to stay at his place. Theyre thinking, great! We can put our tents in your back yard. This guy wouldnt hear of it. He put them up in his house, gave them free run of the joint while he went to work, and kept them in beerlink

Array So far none of the seven western European countries with infected birds have reported human cases, although mammalian infections have been reported in Germany and Austria (cats, marten). Vietnam has reported the most cases and deaths (93/42, 2003 - present), with Indonesia rapidly coming up in second place (29/22, all since July, 2005).The virus has crossed species barriers in birds (approximately five dozen species now infected) and in mammals (9 species). It is differentiating genetically and continuing to evolve, although the meaning of this in terms of public health is unknown.Cambodia, China and Indonesia have reported additional human cases in the last few days, so the virus continues to propagate in birds and humans. Small clusters of human cases have also been seen, although spread beyond secondary cases is not known to occur at this time.Clearly there is a lot going on with this virus, only some of which we know and less we understand.

I just got back to Fairfax from the rally for Abdul Rahman. Below are pictures I took at the rally. We had about 40 people show up, plus police and reporters. Overall, I’d say there were 50-60 people there. Not too bad for a hard to reach part of the city, mid-day on a Friday…I was touched so many people came out in support of Abdul Rahman’s plight:An Afghan who has renounced his Islamic faith for Christianity faces the death penalty under Afghan law in a throwback to the brutal Taleban regime. Abdul Rahman, 41, is being prosecuted for an attack on Islam, for which the punishment under Afghanistan’s draft constitution, is death by hanging. There were people there from the Institute on Religion and Democracy, the Free Republic, a gentleman making a statement on behalf of the East Turkistan government, the Family Research Council, various churches, and many others. I got to meet quite a few other bloggers as well — Daveed Gartenstein-Ross of The Counterterrorism Blog, Jeff Harrell of The Shape of Days, Cam Edwards (who had the idea for the rally), and Michelle Malkin.I have to say I was very impressed by everyone there. I thought the media was very respectful with their questions and very courteous to everyone they spoke to. People speaking during the rally made sure to emphasize that this rally was about human rights and not about a political or religious agenda. The police were present, but did not interfere with anything going on and were very polite and accomodating to everyone there. In a nutshell, this is what freedom of speech and expression should be about. These are freedoms I hope and pray everyone in the world will one day be able to enjoy. Today is a day that made me proud of our country and the liberty we cherish, but so often take for granted. Here are a few of the photos from today (click on each picture to see larger image):Outside the Afghanistan embassy. This sign stuck out to me…Gettting ready to start…I thought this sign was the best use of humor to make a serious point…Opening the rally in prayer…Christian Taylor from the Free Republic.Making a statement on behalf of the East Turkistan government to release Abdul. I’m sorry I didn’t catch his name. He said that the 2-year-old East Turkistan Constitution would have allowed Abdul Rahman the freedom of religion and emplored Afghanistan to release him.Correction/Clarification — One of my readers writes:A word of warning: East Turkistan is not an independent nation (although it should be). East Turkestan (I believe more often spelled that way) is an alternative name for the region called Xinjiang, which was conquered by the People’s Republic of China in 1949 after a brief period of independence. In September of 2004, a so-called government-in-exile was established (here in Washington). Most likely, the spokesman you talked to was from that organization. See here and here.He is absolutely right. I watched the video I took of the speaker and he specifically mentioned it was the East Turkestan government-in-exile that issued this statement. My apologies for the lack of clarification.Quite a few reporters were there, including Reuters.Cam Edwards, who had the idea for the rally, speaks to the media.People from the Institute on Religion and Democracy speak to the press, saying that the Rahman’s situtation highlights the danger of putting Islamic law into the Afgan and Iraqi constitutions. Some of the signs from the rally…People of all ages were there…Michelle Malkin speaks to the crowd. I loved it when she said (in reference to his Christian faith):I had a post asking to save Abdul Rahman. Someone pointed out to me hes already saved.” Amen!Closing the rally in prayer…Afterwards, I even had a chance to meet Michelle! That was very cool!See more thoughts on todays rally here, here, here, here, here, and here. Also, see more pictures here and a video of Cam Edwards speaking here.Read my previous posts on Abdul Rahman here, here, here, here, and here.I want to say a special thank you to everyone who came out today and everyone who helped make this happen. Please continue to keep Abdul Rahman, Afghanistan, and all people everywhere who are being persecuted for their beliefs. I pray everyone around the world will someday enjoy the liberties we have here in America.Update: Becket Fund offers legal assistance to Mr. RahmanThe Becket Fund has offered legal assistance to Abdul Rahman if he is punished for religious conversion in Afghanistan, from or to any religion, in presenting international law defenses before any tribunal. I sent a letter from the BF care of the Afghan embassy here in DC this morning.Read more here, or read our letter to Mr. Rahman. We are in the process of having the letter translated into Pashtun, Farsi, and Dari. I understand that Mr. Rahman speaks Pashtun, but we are extending this offer to all Afghans.link

I have read stuff like that collected Calvin and Hobbes, but not as a part of that spiffy new, and utterly deserved, three-volume hardcover collection. I’m on the fence about Black Hole- I bought one issue early in the run and wasn’t terribly impressed even though I really like Burns’ art. My next comics shipment, set to go out on the 29th, will contain the SC of Top 10: The Forty-Niners, so I’m looking forward to that. Great, thought-provoking list.No doubt you’re all wondering what I thought of the V for Vendetta film, since I spent so much time writing about it back in October.

-ne I thought I’d offer up some of the quotations that I marked in the margins (certainly one way of judging a text: How often did I pull out my pen and put a mark in the margin so that I could find this sentence again?) and some initial thoughts on why I did so, perhaps as a prompt to further conversation:“Once employed at teaching schools, young academics may indeed break productive connections with the larger profession; And yet the fact that my colleagues for the most part never discuss research, the fact that even those of my colleagues with active research agendas only pursue them to the extent that they separate from the rest of the school and from colleagues, means that there’s almost no faculty discussion of research, at least in my field. And since I find that I live my life mostly locally—that is, my colleagues at St. Martyr’s have far more to do with my day-to-day life than researchers in my field who are at different schools—I have in many ways lost “productive connections with the larger profession.” Admittedly, I was never much of a networker ever in my grad school days, but I increasingly find that I don’t know anyone at conferences and have a difficult time connecting with the people whom I should but don’t know. But somehow to put this hierarchy on the same terms as those hierarchies of gender, race, and sexuality—all of which I deal with daily, in terms of either my own life or my research—helped me to think of my internalized hierarchy in political terms rather than simply in personal, emotional terms.

What has true weight is whether they still approve the original decision to go to war, and whether they want to keep troops or demand them to return home. Now, in the June 20-22 AP/Ipsos poll, the original war decision’s support fell to 42%. Steve Gilliard demands an immediate pullout for some time now, and he even attacks a liberal proponent of staged pullout (the war in the comments is maybe more significant than the posts itself), and the Billmon spinoff Moon of Alabama attacks even atrios for not denouncing the government for WMD lies. The apparent catalysts for these changes were back-stabbing attacks by mainstream Democrat representatives (like Biden, Edwards) against DNC chair Dean, after Dean dared to speak badly of Republicans.

This means that we all got together there and did a slow ride to the start ~3 miles away, halfway up a brutal river valley hill. 3 laps of a 13.5 mile loop with 1 brutal uphill and several (lots and lots) short, steep hills that concealed similar hills behind them.My mental funnies: I had an interesting conversation with my body as we rode our bikes to the start. But you just make sure you don’t go quitting halfway through, woman!Welcome to my mental pre-race fun. This is how it played out: The starting point was halfway up the river valley hill (just for a little bit of extra fun toture). The road was in terrible condition with lots of big cracks that made going down pretty unpleasant. The second lap: up the big hill where everyone is parked and watching of course. It’s really hard because the 3 miles in front of the hill are mostly up-hill as well but invisible so I really wanted to push myself on it, but knew that I wanted to save my energy for the big hill because people would be watching me :( I feel so shallow. I got a cold bottle of water the second time up the hill and actually thought I might need to get off the bike for a second. Ironically, it started sprinkling as I crossed the finish line and 10 minutes later turned into a huge 10 minute downpour.Going down the big hill into the last 4 miles of the race, I began to fear that I would flat at that point, totally wasting the last 2 hours of my life.I never was passed by the women, even the cat1/2/3s that started 10 minutes ahead of us and had 4 laps to complete instead 3. The last trip up the big hill and subsequent steep ones took some serious mental work to keep going. I think the worst was knowing that the finish was halfway up the big hill and I *still* wouldn’t be done when I got back to the campgrounds. I wasn’t sure which way to go!”To the guy with a camera on the evil hill: “Pleeeeze don’t take a picture of me!”To the corner marshal at the corner mid-course where I’d had to slow down the first two times: “Well, at least I didn’t have to slow down this time for the corner!”My second time around, Scott asked me how I felt, but I was going too fast to answer, so on the third time past the campground I yelled, I feel like ass!. in me like I could have done better, like maybe I hadn’t tried as hard as I could have to keep up with the group. While I was riding, I really felt like I was doing everything I could to keep up with the group and still felt like I did all I could to give a decent performance. And I feel fine today except for a lingering stiffness in my neck. All I can think is that I need to do lots of hill repeats and start building power and endurance.Something else that occurred to me as I was finishing: I don’t think I’ve ever actually ridden 40 miles without stopping at least once.

Another major problem is the continued loss of sovereignty over affairs in the country by more than 11 MILLION undocumented, unidentified people living and working in the United States. At the same time, we need to do something about the 11 to 13 million illegals currently living in the United States. If they’re currently working, and have gone at least five years without not working or drawing any form of welfare, they score two points per year for each year they’ve been employed. If they’ve paid taxes and social security during any of those years, they get an additional point per year, for a maximum of 20 points. If they’ve hired others (either legal employees or other illegals) they get an additional 10 points for each employee that has paid taxes and worked for at least a year. If they’ve bought a house and consistently made payments on it for at least three years, they get an additional 5 points, plus one additional point for every year they’ve made payments over the initial three.Penalties: All illegals in the country automatically lose 10 points for being in the country without proper documentation and approval. If they have been convicted of any crime other than a routine traffic violation during their stay in the United States, they lose 25 points for each conviction. If they have applied for WIC, AFDC, unemployment compensation, workers’ compensation, or any other form of relief or welfare, they lose 5 points for each time they have applied or been granted such help. Anyone overstaying a visa for longer than 30 days will lose one point for each day over 30 that they have remained in the United States. The number of points can be adjusted later if it proves either too easy or too onorous, but should never be made TOO easy to qualify (below say 30 points). Establish a national database for seasonal workers who come to the United States to pick vegetables or fruit (or other reasons) for a limited time, then return to their homes in their native country. Comparing the data with the list of approved temporary and migrant workers would eliminate many of the fund transfers and allow the INS to concentrate on illegals. My suggestions won’t end all illegal immigration, but it will do a lot more than current legislation being proposed to reduce such immigration, and identifying those who would be welcomed citizens, while protecting us from those who will be as much of a problem here as they would be in their native country.

Some criticisms he sees to be fair are that Congress seems designed to promote grid-lock, too much money in politics, and Congress is run by lobbyists and special interest groups. Hamilton believes that lobbyists and special interest groups are influencing congress on your behalf by helping congress understand how their actions affect the special interest groups not fat cats handing out hundred dollar bills and smoking cigars as people perceive them to be. The American people vote for our representatives in Congress and if they do not trust Congress than they will be less likely to vote. When people see all the corruption that has occurred with several of the members of Congress than this places a bad image on all of the Congress in general and this type of image is what many of Americans see of Congress.

( Ardha Rasi Bhaveth Hora Chathurvimshathi Smrithah )The Sequential Order of WeekdaysThe Order of Weekdays are presided by Sun ( Sunday), Moon ( Monday ), Mars ( Tuesday ), Mercury ( Wednesday ), Jupiter ( Thursday ), Venus ( Friday ) & Saturn ( Saturday ). Planetary HoursPlanetary Hours are a Day divided by TwelveThe lord of the weekday is the Planetary Hour lord From Sunset onwards, the fifth from that lordThe Sixth lord in week order is the next planetary hour lord !( Dina Dwadasamso Matha KalahoraPathi Tasya Poorvasya Varadhi nathaThatha Shashta Shashta Kramena ThareshamNishayam Thu Vareshwarath Panchamadya )A Day divided by 12 gives Planetary Hours ( Kala Hora )The First Hour is presided by the lord of that Day ( viz On Friday, Freya, Venus )From Eve, the fifth from that lord of the day. Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars in sequential order , are the Kala Hora lords.Hence we get the formula for Kala Hora ( Arka Shukra Budhaschandra Manda Jeeva Dharasutha Kramena Kalahoresa ) So on a day the First Hour is ruled by the lord of the day. If a planet is located on the Northern Celestial Hemisphere, it is plus and minus if vice versa.During the Vernal Equinox ( The First Point of Aries ), the declination of the Sun is Zero and his gross RA ( Right Ascension ) is also Zero. During the Winter Solstice ( The First Point of Capricorn ), his declination is -23 degrees & 27 minutes and his gross RA is 270 !In other words, the Sun’s declination will progressively increase from Aries to Cancer, decrease from Cancer to Libra, increase from Libra to Capricorn & then decrease from Capricorn to Aries !

Dear God my shepherd,I’m sorry for the times where I wasn’t content with what you gave me.I’m sorry for the times where i wanted more.I realise that when I forget You, I will only remember myself.Dear Lord, help me not to be selfishor greedyor be reward-seeking towards anyone and everyone around me.Help me remember that only true rewardscome from you.And remind me of the timeswhere you have helped me and given me true rewards and blessings that I never expected.Remind me that without You,I’m nothing but weak and vulnerable.Help me to lay my treasures in heaven, so that my heart may be also placed there.Forgive me for straying away and going after the things of the world. So help me to listen carefully to Your whispersand hang on to Your eternal word.Help me to walk your narrow path and be constant in my promiseas You have always been constant in Yours.Thank You Lord for awakening Me, and once again, finding me, Your beloved lost ‘little lamb’.

One of the songs that I’m thinking of when I call Mann a songwriter in the classic vein, its aching, downbeat balance of resignation and the barest of quiet hopes around a simple, finely-wrought melody make it one of those genuinely perfect pop songs for me.

When Duke Casimir II of Poland not only tried to protect Jews in his domains from pogroms, but invited Jews to move eastward and settle in his vast, underpopulated domains, large numbers of Jews began to move en masse to Poland. This immigration continued into the sixteenth century. Like many Western European rulers of the early Middle Ages (700-1000), the Polish duke and his successors saw the Jews as an economic asset, bringing credit facilities and long-distance trade to the country.By 1500 the Jews had been assigned an additional role of importance in Polish society and the frontier Ukrainian lands also ruled by the Polish nobility. By the early seventeenth century half of the Jewish world population of 3.5 million lived in Poland and the Ukraine. The Jews came to love the Polish and Ukrainian physical environment and in the nineteenth century (if not much earlier) wrote poetry lavishly praising the farmland, forests, and climate of Eastern Europe.
